Improve the skills of prospective doctors who respond to disasters, FK USK holds Disaster Day

Wednesday, December 30, 2015, a frenzied atmosphere seemed to color three hundreds of students of the Faculty of Medicine, Syiah Kuala University (Unsyiah Medical Faculty) who gathered in the courtyard of the Unsyiah Medical Faculty's Center of Health Service Management (CHSM) Building since 6 o'clock in the morning.


Everyone seemed busy making efforts to rescue victims and provide medical assistance to victims of flash floods that occurred in the area. There are those who carry out triage, provide first aid (first aid), evacuate victims, to the process of identifying the victims who died as a result of the flash flood (Disaster Victim Identification).


The incident is part of the Disaster Day implementation scenario which is a simulation of the occurrence of a disaster emergency response. The committee team consisting of lecturers and staff of the Unsyiah Faculty of Medicine, has prepared in such a way as to be similar to the actual incident.


In its implementation, the victims who have been trained, the families of the victims, as well as other needed equipment such as IVs, body bags and so on are prepared. Disaster Day activities are part of the Disaster Management Block activities that must be followed by students of the 2012 medical education study program, Faculty of Medicine, Syiah Kuala University.


Implementation of Disaster Day on Wednesday, December 30 2015. This activity aims to make students understand and animate the role in disaster management, understand how to make contingency plans and cooperate with various parties for disaster management.


Disaster Management Block is the 21st block of the Competency-Based Medical Science Curriculum. This block is also the closing block for preclinical students at the Syiah Kuala University Medical Education Study Program. Having a background in disaster-prone areas, this block is one of the leading blocks because not all medical faculties study Disaster Management in detail.


This block consists of a series of activities, ranging from expert lectures, institutional visits to the Aceh Disaster Management Agency (BPBA) and the Health Crisis Management Center (P2KK), several practicums (making a hazard map, table top simulation, using instruments, DVI) to Disaster Management. Day.


The Disaster Day event ended at 11.00 in the presence of the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Syiah Kuala University, Dr.dr. Mulyadi, Sp.P, Assistant Dean I of the Faculty of Medicine, Syiah Kuala University Dr.dr. Endang Mutiawati Sp.S(K), Head of Disaster Block Dr.dr. Zafrullah Khany Jasa, Sp.An, KNA, and all instructors who are teaching staff of the Unsyiah Faculty of Medicine and staff of the Zainal Abidin General Hospital Banda Aceh.


The Disaster Day event ended with the delivery of messages from the participants and closed with a group photo. The implementation of this Disaster Day activity makes students have a real picture of the disaster management process.


Students who initially only get theory from expert lectures, are now able to play an active role during practicum activities.

It is hoped that in the future, with this disaster management block, doctors' knowledge will increase in the disaster field, so that the organizational flow during the implementation of emergency response to disasters will be more organized later, especially in the health sector.
