Faculty of Medicine Universitas Syiah Kuala is one of Faculties in Universitas Syiah Kuala, Faculty of Medicine was founded in 1982 and currently has 16 Study Programs

Aceh people had a desire to have Faculty of Medicine in Aceh for a long time

As a chairman of Presidium Universitas Syiah Kuala, Drs. Marzuki Nyakman was the first to initiate the need for a Faculty of Medicine in Universitas Syiah Kuala. Realized by issuing Surat Keputusan 2411/Unsyiah/UP-1964 about the Forming of Preparatory Committee for the establishment of Faculty of Medicine in Universitas Syiah Kuala

The Chief Committee had T. Oesman Jacob (former Mayor of Banda Aceh) and Zaini Bakri (Former Regent of Aceh Besar) as vice.

Since many requirements to establish a Faculty of Medicine have not been met, The Committee has not been able to make The Faculty of Medicine Universitas Syiah Kuala. Those requirements including The Banda Aceh General Hospital have not been suitable for education, lack of funding, facilities and infrastructure, and Universitas Syiah Kuala is relatively new.

The Ministry of Health, Republic of Indonesia paid great attention to the establishment of the Faculty of Medicine Universitas Syiah Kuala. According to the letter to the Commander of the Inter-Regional Command (KOANDA) Sumatra in Medan, dated October 3, 1967 No. Kab/BCH/249/67, asked KOANDA to help prepare the construction of RSU Banda Aceh into a Teaching Hospital. Due to the inadequate political situation and other supporting factors, the committee was unable to complete its duties.

When Minister of Education and Culture, Prof. Dr. Daoed Joesoef visit the Special Region of Aceh on June 11, 1979, several community leaders, the Regional government, DPRD and Majelis Ulama requested the minister to provide the facilities and make the establishment of Faculty of Medicine in the Special Region of Aceh priority.

In response, The Minister of Education and Culture was willing to assist in its implementation.

The first initial step, The Governor of Aceh, Prof. A. Majid Ibrahim with SK No. 412.5/321/1979 dated June 23. In 1979 formed the Preparation Agency for The Establishment of Faculty of Medicine Universitas Syiah Kuala, Banda Aceh. The Advisory board consists of the Governor and Muspida. Muhammad Hasan Basri ( Sekwilda Special Region of Aceh) Appointed as a chief of Agency , Dr. Ibrahim Hasan ( Rector of Universitas Syiah Kuala) as vice chief I, and dr Yuliddin Away as vice chief II. As a secretary dr Nek Muhammad ( Director of General Hospital Banda Aceh), and dr Kamaruzzaman as a treasurer. Drs Karimuddin Hasybullah, dr. Ridhwan Ibrahim, Sp.B., dan dr. T. Makmur Mohd Zain, SKM. appointed as member and general assistant.

The results of the work are written in a Report book on the Preparation Agency for The Establishment of Faculty of Medicine Universitas Syiah Kuala, Banda Aceh in 19979. The report was submitted to the Minister of Education and Culture in Jakarta early August 1979. The next step. The Directorate General of Education and Culture formed an Evaluation Team with SK No. 028/Dj/Kep/79, October 2, 1979. The team submitted a report to The Directorate General of Higher Education in November 1979.

In January 1980, The consortium of Medical Education Of Directorate General of Higher Education assigned The Development Program for Faculty of Medicine Universitas Syiah Kuala and Rector of Universitas Syiah Kuala with SK No 20/1980 dated May 14 1980 formThe Core team of Establishment for Faculty of Medicine Universitas Syiah Kuala. The Minister of Education and Culture with SK No.0217/0/1980 dated August 27 1980, instructed Universitas Syiah Kuala and The Consortium of Medical Education to prepare The Opening of Faculty of Medicine Universitas Syiah Kuala.

In the year of 1980, 1981 and 1982, The Faculty of Medicine of Universitas Syiah Kuala collaborated with Several Medical Faculties of other State Universities such as

·       Faculty of Medicine – University of North Sumatra (USU)

·       Faculty of Medicine – Andalas University

·       Faculty of Medicine – Sriwijaya University

·       Faculty of Medicine – Padjadjaran University

·       Faculty of Medicine – Diponegoro University

·       Faculty of Medicine – Brawijaya University

·       Faculty of Medicine – Airlangga University

·       Faculty of Medicine – Udayana University

·       Faculty of Medicine – Hasanuddin University

The form of Cooperation is to develop the prospective Teaching staff and selection process of prospective students for Faculties of Medicine mentioned above and later will become academic staff at Faculty of Medicine Universitas Syiah Kuala.

As the realization of SK No. 0217/0/1980, on the XIX anniversary of Universitas Syiah Kuala on September 2, 1980 at the DPRD Building of the Special Region of Aceh, the Minister of Education and Culture Prof. Dr. Daoed Joesoef signed the Charter of the Inauguration of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Syiah Kuala. At the same time, the Preparation Agency handed over the Faculty of Medicine  to Universitas Syiah Kuala

Based on SK No. 0217/O/1980 above, the Rector of Universitas Syiah Kuala formed a Preparatory Committee for the opening of The Faculty of Medicine UNiversitas Syiah Kuala with SK No. 05 of 1981 dated February 19, 1981, together with the revocation of SK  of the Presidium of Universitas Syiah Kuala No. 2411/Unsyiah/Up/1964, dated November 10, 1964 and the Rector's SK No. 20 of 1980, May 14, 1980.

On April 1, 1982, the Minister of Education and Culture Prof. Dr. Daoed Joesoef deliver  the SK President of the Republic of Indonesia No. 16 of 1982 about the Organizational Structure of Universitas Syiah Kuala stated that The Faculty of Medicine as one of Faculties in Universitas Syiah Kuala

In 1982 the Faculty of Medicine of Universitas Syiah Kuala occupied the building of  Akademi Pemerintahan Dalam Negeri on Jalan T. Nyak Arief, then in 1986 moved to the Rector's Bureau building located on Jalan Tgk. Chik Pante Kulu and in 1988 the Faculty of Medicine owned a building with the area of 4389 m2 which is now located on Jalan Tgk Syech Abdul Rauf Darussalam - Banda Aceh, built on the area of 61,650 m2 , while the lecture building is located in the hospital of dr. Zainoel Abidin and about 725 m2 .

During its development, the Faculty of Medicine Universitas Syiah Kuala has several study programs, they are  1). Medicine Study Program (PSPD), 2). Medical Profession Study Program, 3). Nursing Science Study Program (PSIK), 4). Dental Science Study Program (PSKG), 5). Psychology. The Medicine Study Program (PSPD) was established to fulfill the desires of all people in Aceh Province and generally becomes the main choice for prospective students, from within and outside Aceh Province. In dealing with various health problems, the government has planned various efforts in education, research and community service so the health sector development goals are achieved in accordance with the new paradigm of higher education.

The Medicine Study Program is one of the most active study programs at the Faculty of Medicine of Universitas Syiah Kuala. It can be assessed by the increasing number of students who applied and accepted each academic year, and the increasing number of teaching staff needed. In accordance with the development plan, increasing the number and quality of Human Resources (HR), especially teaching staff development, has been carried out since the beginning of The Faculty of Medicine of Universitas Syiah Kuala until now. This can be shown by an increase in the academic qualifications of teaching staff who have obtained the title of Professor 3 people, Doctoral 4 people, Master 24 people, Doctor 41 people, Specialist Doctor 65 people, Consultant Specialist 7 people, Specialist Dentist 2 people, Dentists 3 people and other Bachelor (S-1) 15 people. Until now, several teaching staff are continuously pursuing further education, with qualifications of Doctor (PhD), Master, Specialist Doctor, and Consultant Specialist, both domestically and abroad.

In 1999, with SK from the Directorate General of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education and Culture Republic of Indonesia Number 298/DIKTI/Kep/1999, The Nursing Science Study Program at the Faculty of Medicine of Universitas Syiah Kuala was officially established. The inaugural year of admission began in 1999/2000 through a special selection (PSIK-A Program) organized by Universitas Syiah Kuala. New student admissions for PSIK FK started in 2000.

Through the Selection of New Student Admissions (SPMB). Acceptance of Program B students (educational background Diploma III in Nursing) began in the 2000 academic year through a special selection held by Universitas Syiah Kuala. PSIK-faculty of medicine at Universitas Syiah Kuala applies the National Curriculum for Nurses Education and local content curriculum which consists of two stages of educational programs, they are the Academic Education Program and the Professional Education Program that will produce professional nurses. Thirteen years later (in 2013), the Director General of Higher Education determined that the Nursing Science Study Program became the Faculty of Nursing with SK of the Directorate General of Higher Education, Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia Number 2649/E. E2. 2/KL/2013.

In January 2003 the Faculty of Medicine started to open the Specialist-I Medical Education Program (PPDS-I) at the Faculty of Medicine of Universitas Syiah Kuala.  These fields of science are Internal Medicine, Pediatrics Health, Neurology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery and Anesthesiology with the supervisors of USU Medical Faculty, UI Medical Faculty and Unhas Medical School.

The Faculty of Medicine of Universitas Syiah Kuala obtained Accreditation B in September 2005, with the SK from the National Accreditation Board for Higher Education (BAN PT) of the Ministry of National Education of the Republic of Indonesia Number 016/BAN-PT/AK-IX/S1/IX/2005, about results and rankings study program accreditation for undergraduate (S1) programs. With this accreditation The Faculty of Medicine of Universitas Syiah Kuala is expected to compete globally.

The Dentistry Study Program (PSKG) is a study program that was later born at the Faculty of Medicine of Universitas Syiah Kuala and the inaugural student admission was carried out in 2006 by the Faculty of Medicine of Universitas Syiah Kuala, only in 2007 the selection was made through SPMB. The curriculum applied to the Dentistry Study Program is the Competency-Based National Curriculum (KBK) with the Problem Based Learning (PBL) method with the FKG UI Jakarta supervisor. In 2013, with SK of the Directorate General of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia Number 1272/E.E1./KL/2013 The Dentistry Study Program became the Faculty of Dentistry.

In 2007, the Faculty of Medicine of Universitas Syiah Kuala established a Psychology Study Program and began accepting new students. This program was established in collaboration with the Faculty of Psychology, Universitas Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta.

Implementing the curriculum at the Faculty of Medicine of Universitas Syiah Kuala from 1982 to August 2006, still used KIPDI II, a teacher-centered learning strategy, with a semester credit system, which required 6 years of education (12 semesters).

Starting September 4, 2006 the Medical Education Study Program, Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Syiah Kuala implemented a new curriculum for students of the 2006/2007 academic year, the Competency-Based Curriculum (KBK) or the Core Curriculum for Indonesian Medical Education - III (KIPDI III). For KIPDI III implementation, the Faculty curriculum was compiled and approved by the Senate of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Syiah Kuala. The length of study with this KBK is 11 semesters (5.5 years), consisting of an academic stage of 7 semesters (3.5 years) and a professional stage of 4 semesters (2 years). The KBK learning process uses the PBL method.

Starting July 2013, the Medical Education Study Program, Universitas Syiah Kuala, implemented a revised 2006 curriculum, the Competency-Based Curriculum (KBK) 2013 before the implementation was approved by the Senate of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Syiah Kuala.

The length of education using Competency-Based Curriculum (KBK) 2013 is the same as the 2006 Curriculum, as well as the learning process which uses Problem Based Learning, only the percentage of lectures increased in the 2013 KBK Curriculum.

In 2016, the Faculty of Medicine of Universitas Syiah Kuala established the ENT-KL Specialist Doctor Education Program, Pulmonology and Respiratory Specialist Doctor Education Program, Neurology Specialist Doctor Education Program and Pediatric Health Specialist Doctor Education Program.

In 2017 the medical faculty of Syiah Kuala University opened the Anesthesia Specialist and Intensive Therapy Doctor Education Program and the Cardiology Specialist Doctor Education Program. In 2018 the medical faculty of Syiah Kuala University has opened a Masters Program (S2) in Public Health Sciences. The Doctoral Study Program in Medical Sciences, which is the first doctoral study program at the Faculty of Medicine, Syiah Kuala University, was opened in 2019. In addition, in the same year, the Plastic Surgery Specialist Doctor Education Study Program was opened. In 2021, two study programs will be opened, namely the Biomedical Science Masters Study Program and the Orthopedic and Traumatology Specialist Doctor Education Program.

The development of the Faculty of Medicine continues to be carried out by increasing the opening of study programs until finally in 2022, three study programs were opened, namely the Radiology Specialist Doctor Education Program, Tropical Medicine Masters Program and Clinical Microbiology Specialist Doctor Education Program.

The entire study program owned by the Faculty of Medicine has been and will be increased in capacity so that it has the highest standard of medical education both at the national and international levels.
