An earthquake measuring 6.4 occurred on July 27, 2018, centered in the East Lombok district.

The earthquake caused damage to several houses and public facilities. A week after the earthquake on 27 July, there was an earthquake measuring 7.0 centered in northern Lombok.

An early tsunami warning due to the earthquake had occurred and caused panic throughout the province of West Nusa Tenggara. The damage from the second quake seemed more severe than the first quake, assuming some buildings that had been weakened by the first quake were severely damaged by the second quake.

After the Lombok earthquake, as a form of concern and sympathy for the Acehnese people towards the people of Lombok, the Acting Governor of Aceh and the Chancellor of Syiah Kuala University (Unsyiah) coordinated and subsequently agreed to form an assessment team aimed at conducting an initial assessment.

This initial assessment aims to map the damage and also distribute initial assistance to the Lombok people affected by the earthquake that occurred and finally produce recommendations to the Aceh regional government in providing assistance and contributing forms as a response both in the emergency response phase and in the rehabilitation and reconstruction phase.

The initial assessment team sent by the Aceh regional government was an integrated team consisting of academics from Syiah Kuala University, staff from the Aceh Disaster Management Agency (BPBA), medical personnel from the Zainal Abidin General Hospital (RSUZA), the Health Service, Social Service and Doctors' Association. Indonesia (IDI) Aceh.

This team departed based on the Governor's assignment letter. The integrated assessment team formed by the Aceh government left for Lombok on 10 August. The integrated team formed by the Aceh government is to carry out an assessment and damage mapping with the aim of knowing the level of damage so that the Aceh government can determine Aceh's contribution to the recovery of the NTB area that was affected by the earthquake and provide assistance to the handling of victims during the emergency response period.
