The Anesthesia and intensive therapy section of the Unsyiah Medical Faculty/RSUD dr. Zainoel Abidin Aceh Province
It is now almost 60 years since the scientific profession of anesthesia was pioneered and has grown rapidly in Indonesia so that there are centers for Anesthesiology Education and intensive therapy in medical faculties, including KSM Anesthesiology and intensive therapy, Faculty of Medicine, Syiah Kuala University.
The scope of clinical practice of the anesthesiologist has also undergone development, not only general and regional anesthetic procedures in the operating room and outside the operating room, the anesthesiologist's role is more directed to holistic perioperative medicine, including pain management and critical patient management. Anesthesiologists are also a mainstay in every emergency and disaster management.
History of Anesthesiology and Intensive Therapy Study Program
On April 1, 1982, the Minister of Education and culture DR.Daoed Joesoef conveyed the presidential decree of the Republic of Indonesia No.16 of 1982 regarding the organizational structure of Syiah Kuala University which stated that Syiah Kuala University consisted of, among others, the Faculty of Medicine.
At first FK Unsyiah sent outside lecturers for lecture education and sent young doctors to Adam Malik Hospital in Medan to take part in clinical clerkship. In 1990 the Faculty of Medicine sent dr. Fachrul Jamal to take part in the Anesthesia specialist education program and intensive therapy, and in 1995 he returned as a specialist in anesthesiology and intensive therapy and built anesthesia services at the Faculty of Medicine, Syiah Kuala University, then in 1999 he continued his sub-specialist education as an Intensive Care consultant in University of Indonesia.
In 2011 Anesthesiology FK Unsyiah collaborated with FK Universitas Indonesia for the 1st specialist doctor education program and in 2017 FK Unsyiah officially established itself as an Anesthesiology specialist education program and accepted 4 students in the early stages.
Currently in 2022, SMF of anesthesiology and intensive therapy FK Unsyiah / RSUDZA has grown rapidly with a total of 14 teaching staff with various sub-specialist fields and 46 PPDS 1 participants.

The scope of anesthesia services has been very broad. In addition to general anesthesia, regional anesthesia, critical care medicine is also developing which includes emergency medicine and intensive care medicine. The philosophical foundation for the establishment of an anesthesiology and intensive therapy education program is based on the two main goals of the medical profession. The first is life support or life support medical assistance. Second, relieve the patient's suffering which is manifested in various medical therapies to relieve pain and anxiety.
Legal Basis for Establishing PPDS-1 Anesthesiology and Intensive Therapy
The establishment of the anesthesiology and intensive therapy specialist education program is based on a legal basis in the form of government regulations and decisions of the Minister of Education, regulations and decisions within Syiah Kuala University as well as regulations and decisions of the Indonesian medical council.
Curriculum preparation is also based on various rules, both Government Regulations, Ministerial Regulations, councils, collegiums as well as from universities and teaching hospitals in the form of a joint strategic plan.
Besides the legal basis, there are also other foundations set by the Indonesian College of Anesthesia and Intensive Therapy, namely the sociological and philosophical foundations, including a humanistic approach to patients, accompanied by high professionalism and ethical considerations, namely the principle of non-maleficence, the principle of do good (beneficience), the principle of respecting the patient's autonomy (autonomy) and the principle of justice (justice).

Anesthesiology and intensive therapy specialists who work in Indonesia must be 5 stars doctors who act as care providers, communicators, decision makers, managers, community leaders, and researchers.
In its journey, the process of becoming a 5 stars doctor has been carried out in stages since the beginning of education, through interaction with various aspects of the health service of the teaching hospital.
