Mental disorders are included in the disease with the highest number. In 2016, the International Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) estimated that more than 1.1 billion people worldwide suffer from mental disorders and substance dependence. Meanwhile, based on the 2018 Riskesdas data, there was a significant increase from 1.7% to 7%. Various types of mental disorders that can occur are anxiety, depression, learning disorders, substance abuse to psychotic disorders (severe mental disorders). Given the increase in cases of mental disorders that continue to increase every year, the involvement of the Psychiatric Department as one of the educational centers will be very necessary.
The Department of Mental Medicine is one of the sections under the auspices of the Faculty of Medicine, Syiah Kuala University. Currently, USK Medical Faculty has collaborated with Zainal Abidin Hospital and Aceh Hospital to provide direct education to students. Currently the Psychiatric Department has 7 teaching staff and 2 expert consultants who are graduates from well-known medical faculties in Indonesia.
The USK Mental Medicine Department also has a high commitment to continue to develop itself, this can be seen in the preparation for the establishment of the Specialist Doctor Education Program (PPDS) I Mental Medicine.
