Pulmonology and Respiratory Medicine

The development of pulmonology in Indonesia began with developments in the field of diagnostics and treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis, Stichting Centrale Voor Tuberculose Bestrijding (SCVT) around 1930 which was inaugurated by Mrs. de Jonge (wife of the Governor General of the Netherlands at that time). All doctors who work in this field are recognized as specialists in pulmonary disease and are given a Longarts brevet. Later the term Longarts changed its name to pulmonologist. Lung Disease Experts accept the fact that the establishment of SCVT in 1930 was the beginning of the development of Pulmonology in Indonesia. The name Pulmonology for the science of lung disease was officially accepted by the Indonesian Lung Doctors Association in 1973.

The development of Pulmonology in Aceh began with the return of Dr. T. Moead Zulkifli Sp.P from pulmonary specialist education from FKUI in 1987. At that time pulmonary services and education were integrated in the SMF / Internal Medicine Division. In 2003, pulmonary services and education were officially independent from the SMF/IPD Division based on the Decree of the Dean of FK Unsyiah and officially became one of the 17 divisions within the Unsyiah Faculty of Medicine.
