USK Faculty of Medicine embraces world campuses in child and adolescent health research

The Faculty of Medicine, Syiah Kuala University embraces two world campuses, namely the University of Copenhagen, the University of Colorado Boulder and the Danish Institute against Torture (DIGNITY) research institute and the University of Indonesia, to conduct research related to the health of children and adolescents.


This research kick off meeting was held at the Unsyiah Senate Hall.


(Darussalam, 13/1). The Dean of FK Unsyiah Prof. Dr. Maimun Syukri Sp.PD (K) said this joint research was funded by the Swiss Botnar Foundation which involved a number of researchers from the campus. The research theme is Addressing the wellbeing and security needs of urban children and adolescents in Indonesia in the digital era.


Maimun said, Aceh experienced two important events that caused a large death toll, namely armed conflict and the 2004 earthquake and tsunami.


These two tragedies have caused a large number of deaths. But now, Aceh's population growth has increased very significantly, especially among children and adolescents.


This age group has a very dynamic development, so it requires special attention to support its development.


Because this age group often experiences various problems, and most likely will affect their growth and development.

For this reason, Maimun considers this joint research very important. He also invites doctoral or postgraduate students who are interested in this research theme to be involved in this research.


This research collaboration should provide the highest benefit in improving the welfare of children and youth, especially in Banda Aceh.

Dr. Sharlena from DIGNITY said the scope of this research is to adapt the SCSS model, as a comprehensive approach to dealing with children's health.


This research activity involves multi-disciplinary and uses effective information gathering tools. This is very much in line with the program that has been implemented by DIGNITY so far.


Where this institution, plays an active role in assisting families in dealing with trauma and daily problems, seeks to improve parenting skills, social reintegration and interpersonal learning.


Our partners have more than 20 countries. We work to support and develop the capacity of local organizations. And now, Unsyiah is one of our most important new partners.

Unsyiah Chancellor Prof. Dr. Ir. Samsul Rizal, M.Eng said he was very proud of the involvement of FK Unsyiah in this research.


This international research collaboration will further strengthen Unsyiah's position at the global level. So far, Unsyiah has given a lot of attention to international-scale research collaborations. Either in the form of educational programs or joint research with foreign parties.


In the span of 2018 – 2019, Unsyiah has collaborated with several world campuses. Such as Tokyo Metropolitan University, Oberlin Shansi Memorial Association, University of Dundee, Scotland, Leiden University, The Netherlands and University of Limoges, France.


So we hope that this research collaboration has a meaningful impact on the well-being of children and youth, not only for Aceh but also for Indonesia and the global community. We look forward to the best possible success of this research project.
