On Sunday, November 5, 2023, the Master's Program in Tropical Medicine at Universitas Syiah Kuala actively participated in a disaster simulation event titled Disaster Day 2023. The event took place at the USK Mini Stadium and was attended by various parties who play crucial roles in disaster management. Disaster Day 2023 was designed to provide participants with practical experience and in-depth knowledge about disaster preparedness and response, which has become increasingly relevant amid the rising frequency of natural disasters due to climate change.
The event began with an introduction explaining the importance of disaster simulations as a preparatory step for emergency situations. Participants, including students from the Master's Program in Tropical Medicine, were briefed on the scenarios that would be conducted. The simulations covered a range of essential techniques, from evacuating disaster victims and administering first aid to coordinating among rescue teams.
In one scenario, participants were trained to evacuate victims from areas deemed dangerous due to an earthquake. They learned how to identify safe evacuation routes, assist injured victims, and prioritize rescue actions. Additionally, participants practiced first aid techniques, including treating physical injuries such as fractures, wounds, and internal injuries. These skills are critical, especially in situations where access to professional medical services may be limited.
Beyond practical techniques, the event also emphasized the importance of effective coordination and communication among the teams involved. Participants were taught how to communicate efficiently using emergency communication tools and how to organize rescue teams to work together in fast-paced and often uncertain situations. Effective coordination between medical teams, firefighters, police, and volunteers was a key focus, as it can significantly impact the speed and effectiveness of disaster response.
The participation of USK Master's students in Disaster Day 2023 demonstrated their commitment to preparing for various potential emergency situations. This valuable experience not only enhanced their disaster preparedness but also strengthened their ability to work under pressure and in critical situations. The event also provided an opportunity for participants to apply the theories learned in the classroom to real-world practice, making them more ready to enter the field after completing their studies.
It is hoped that activities like Disaster Day can become a regular agenda, allowing more students and the general public to get involved and benefit from these disaster simulations. This way, communities can become more prepared and resilient in facing disasters, thereby reducing the risks and negative impacts that may arise.
